A woman paddles down an ice-laden Battle River in March with her young daughter.

This is one of my ancestors, Margaret Poitras. During the Red River Resistance, she was forced to flee her home in a thin birch bark canoe finding only poisoned food the RCMP had left behind.  She travelled 13 days down the ice-laden river with her two daughters and husband. They were Metis they could find no shelter amongst the Europeans or the First Nations for hundreds of kilometers. They eventually found shelter in a Metis community in Prince Albert, over 300km away. Read more about the story here

We found this story in a tiny museum in a town that barely exists. In the story, her husband features the largest part and she is not even referred to by name. However, I know the strength of our women and I know that a mother faced with this life-threatening journey would show the most impeccable courage. So, here I celebrate her.

This painting shows the tension that our people have endured. They could find shelter neither with the First Nations people nor the European people.

The sixth painting in my collection, Otipemisewak
