 An abalone shell holds a smoking sage bundle and a braid of sweetgrass lies next to it. This is smudging. It's a sacred act meant to cleanse the energies of the person or space who is being smudged. 

It's painted on the scrip application of my ancestors. It tells me about the history of my people and where we come from. 

The text on the page says: "Are you a member of any Indian band? No, but I was until 1891 when my father took his discharge. I have no certificate nor witness to prove my discharge from treaty. We lived at Gambler Indian Reserve at Fort Ellice, Man. This reserve has since been repossessed by the government and is now all being taken up by settlers."
