Spend the year with my art! Enjoy some beautiful art from the past year.

This year's calendar displays both the English and Northern Michif months and how to pronounce. Eg. January, Kîsipîsim - The Great Moon. (kee-sih-pee-sim). The first full moon of the year is known as The Great Moon in Michif.

Michif is the traditional language of the Métis People, and Northern Michif is the language spoken by Erin's maternal grandparents.

The calendar features the holidays as well as the full and new moons.

Size: 11 x 17 when open

About Michif

Michif is not a single language but contains a large amount of diversity. Three different languages - Heritage (Southern) Michif, Northern Michif and French Michif, Michif is characterized by it's blend with Cree and French. In the case of Northern Michif, more Cree is present in the language. Many of the months are also similar to the Cree months.

I chose the Northern Michif translations because they reference the changing seasons and contain information about the ecosystem and because Northern Michif is generally found where my ancestors are from. The Heritage Michif months are all based on the French language and do not contain references to the changing seasons.

It should be marked that many communities have different names for the moons. So, unlike English, not everything is consistent across communities. This reflects the beautiful diversity across the Metis Nation. So, please do not take this as any official list. Instead, the purpose is to connect to the language and ground oneself in the changes of the land.

For translation, the Northern Michif app developed by the Gabriel Dumont Institute was used. Translations are by Vince Ahenakew. All errors are my own.
