I hold my daughter's hands, teaching her to walk in the cold glacial waters of the Athabasca River, in Jasper. Behind us, Metis florals erupt in joy.
When we began our great Saskatchewan roadtrip my daughter hadn't learned to walk yet. By the time we finished touring our ancestral lands, three weeks had passed and she was learning to walk. I remember the summer sun was thin in the high Rockies, and the water was cold but the sand was still warm under our feet. It was one of those special moments.
The text beneath the image is from a scrip paper from one of my ancestors. It's dated 1876.
