It's the warm period of winter when the trees haven't begun to bud yet, but the snow has melted off of the branches. It's crisp, refreshing and the sap in the birch trees will start to run soon. People will be tapping birch to make syrup soon.

Birch are a beautiful, sacred tree. Their bark is used to make baskets and was used to make wigwams, the traditional homes of some of my ancestors. Today, when I look up at them, I feel like I'm home.
